Without a doubt one of my favorite sports writers of all time is Gordon Edes. An award-winning baseball writer, Edes has covered the Boston Red Sox for the last 15 years and is considered to be one of the best baseball writers today. After working for the Boston Globe for a number of years, Edes now earns his paycheck writing for the worldwide leader in sports, ESPN.
One of my favorite aspects to Gordon's writing is that it is filled with vivid detail that puts the reading right at the scene. Gordon does an amazing job capturing a moment and putting it into perspective through the use of his immense historical knowledge. Not only are you being entertained by his work, but you also learn quite a bit.
Gordon is also not afraid to show a little wit. Often times he will sneak in a joke or two to lighten up the mood on a difficult topic.
Gordon's incredible knowledge of the game and ability to really capture an image are definitely techniques I try to model whenever I am writing a sports piece. While I am certainly not even close to the level of writer that he is, I definitely think I have learned a lot over the years from reading Gordon's work.
